What drives us
We're all about supporting initiatives that champion Community Health, Environmental Justice, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Defining what drives us…
-
Community Health
As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), community health is a state of wellbeing encompassing the physical, mental, and social dimensions of individuals within a community. Community health reflects the collective capacity to lead fulfilling lives and engage in productive activities, emphasizing the elimination of health disparities.
Planning can impact community health through the creation of accessible and safe public spaces, recreational areas, transportation infrastructure, and diverse housing options.
-
Environmental Justice
As defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, environmental justice entails fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
Planning can actively advance environmental justice, through meaningful public engagement as well as the strategic placement of facilities and developments. This can involve incorporating measures like zoning regulations to limit pollution near residences and prioritizing green spaces in underserved neighborhoods.
-
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
As stated by the American Planning Association, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential principles aimed at creating fair, accessible, and inclusive communities for all. Diversity recognizes and values the differences among individuals, equity strives to provide equal opportunities and outcomes, and inclusion fosters a sense of belonging for people of all backgrounds.
Planning can contribute to championing DEI by actively working to eliminate barriers, addressing historical injustices, and ensuring that the planning process includes and benefits everyone in the community.
